What is Colostrum?

Colostrum is your first form of breast milk that is released by the mammary glands after giving birth. It is high in nutrients, antibodies, and antioxidants to build your new born's immune system. Your colostrum will change to breast milk in two to four days after your baby is born. The colour of colostrum is more yellow and thicker than your traditional breast milk.

Is my Nipple Leak Normal during Pregnancy?

The answer is yes and it's completely normal. In Pregnancy your breasts start to produce milk weeks or even months before you are due. So if you start experiencing nipple leakdon't freak out as it is most commonly colostrum. Colostrum is your first form of breast milk (To know more about colostrum, read our blog about colos- trum) If your nipple leak is bothering you, you can try putting a tissue or an absorbent breast pads in your bra to absorb the breast milk. Nipple leak is completely normal until you start noticing blood in it. If the milk leaking from your breast has blood in it, talk to you gynaecologist.

What are the tiny bumps around my areolas?

Those tiny bumps around your areolas are called Montgomery glands. These glands are not visible until you are aroused or preg- nant. During pregnancy your, as your breasts will increase in size for breastfeeding, the Montgomery glands will swell as well and they are completely normal. These glands look like small bumps or pimples on the nipples or areolas. Montgomery glands provide lu- brication to your nipples and areolas by gland secretions. They are a combination of milk and sebaceous glands. If you notice any red- ness, inflammation or bloody discharge, contact your gynaecolo- gist immediately.
