Breastfeeding is among the most magical and surreal experiences for mothers out there. Whether it’s your first time or second time being a mom, breastfeeding will always feel like a new experience for you.
- Myth 1 – Breastfeeding will ruin the shape of your Breasts
No! Breastfeeding will not ruin the shape of your breasts. It is very common for mothers to have the fear that pregnancy and breastfeeding will change the shape of their breasts for worse but it doesn’t. Your breast will grow as you start gaining weight as swell as well as they will produce milk, but that’s all!, once you start shedding your pregnancy weight and eventually start weaning your baby, your breasts are going to come back to their original “normal” shape. So don’t worry and enjoy the special bonding time you are going to get with your baby.
- Myth 2 – Breastfeeding is easy
Babies are born with reflexes to look or search for their mother’s breasts, but sometimes a lot of mother’s need practical support with the positioning of the baby for the breastfeeding and make sure that the baby is correctly attached to the mother’s breast. Breastfeeding takes time for both mother and baby. It is time intensive and so mothers need their own space and time. So when next time someone tells you that breastfeeding is easy, don’t listen to them.
- Myth 3- Breastfeeding is painful
Yes Breastfeeding can be painful, but it only happens because majority of the pain is caused by your baby being in a bad position while you are nursing them. What can you do? Try a new position or switch breasts that will reduce the discomfort and even sore nipples can be avoided. Still if the pain persists or experience other breastfeeding challenges like sore nipples, a support from lactation expert or your Gynaecologist can help you overcome the breastfeeding pain.
- Myth 4- Breastfeeding mothers should only eat plain food
Just like everyone else, mothers need balanced diet. What we mean is, mothers don’t need to have a special diet or change their food habits, thinking it will affect their breastfeeding. In reality, babies are well aware off or are exposed to their mother’s food preferences since they are in the womb. If a mother thinks that their baby reacts to a specific food, they can consult their doctor and know more about the food habits.
- Myth 5 – Small size breasts are not able to produce enough Breast milk
Most common myth that affects a lot of women with small breasts and makes them uncomfortable. There’s no reason for you to be comfortable and be worried that your baby is not getting enough milk. The mammary gland is almost same the size in every woman and different size has nothing do with the production of milk. Conclusion? Breast size has nothing do with the production of milk. It is very important to understand that lactation depends on baby’s appetite. The more a baby nurses, the more milk mother will be able to produce.
- Myth 6 – Mother’s should not breastfeed if they are sick
It completely depends on the type of illness, but other than that mothers can continue breastfeeding their babies even when sick. Mother’s need to get the right treatment, rest, eat and drink well. Most of the time, the antibodies a mother’s body makes to treat their disease or ill will pass on to their baby , building their defences.
- Myth 7 – Exercising will affect the taste of Breastmilk
Exercises are meant for the bodies to be healthy even for the breastfeeding mothers. There is no evidence that proves exercising affects the taste of the breastmilk. With proper guidance, mothers can exercise for their healthy lifestyle and breastfeed their babies without any worries.
